A recent presentation by researcher Zu-Yin Chen, MD, a cardiologist fellow suggests that people who receive professional teeth cleanings at least every two years had 24% less of a chance to have a heart attack, compared to people who do not. His findings were based off a large scale study conducted on over 100,000 people for an average of seven years. Cleanings also reduced the risk of stroke, which was reduced by at least 13%.
Benefits of Teeth Cleaning
Cleanings remove bacteria from your teeth and gums, and gives your teeth a protective layer against bacteria. Bacteria buildups on your teeth can lead to chronic infection and inflammation of your gums.
The exact reasoning of the link between strokes or heart attacks and dental health is not clear, but inflammation is a shared problem between heart and oral diseases.
“Something as simple as having good dental hygiene — brushing, flossing, and having regular cleanings — may be good for your heart and brain health,” says Ralph Sacco, MD, head of neurology at the University of Miami. Sacco was not involved in the study, but is the immediate past president of the American Heart Association (AHA).
Dentists’ Recommendations are Best
Dr. Khodai and other dental professionals recommend getting your teeth cleaned at least every six months. Results from the study found that individuals who followed this schedule and received more than one cleaning a year were the least at risk for heart attacks or strokes.
Dr. Sacco pointed out that people with good dental hygiene are commonly found to have better diets and exercise more than people who do not. This study was presented at a conference and is still considered to be preliminary findings, as results are not finalized until they have been published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.
