If you are planning a trip then you are probably distracted with travel details and packing, but it’s important to not forget to plan ahead on taking care of your teeth while on the road. We’ve compiled some helpful dental tips for your vacation below.
Get a Checkup Before Your Trip
Schedule a checkup or cleaning with your regular dentist before your trip. Not only will they get you ready to go, they can find or prevent a problem that could ruin your trip.
Stick With Your Schedule
While on vacation it may be easy to skip your regular dental hygiene routine. Coupled with increased chances to drink high amounts of soda, alochol, or other sugary drinks while on vacation, this can quickly lead to plaque buildup on your teeth. Make sure to stay as close to your regular routine as possible, and ADA approved sugarless gum is great item to keep in your pocket to help keep your teeth clean between brushing.
Make Sure You Leave Prepared
Not everywhere you travel to may have essential dental health items. For hygiene, make sure to bring two toothbrushes, floss, toothpaste, and some chapstick. Advil and Tylenol are also a great item to bring. Not just for headaches but toothaches as well. Optionally, but definitely recommended, bring a dental first aid kit for any emergencies. If you happen to wear dentures, bring your emergency pair with you. For anyone with a temporary crown, make sure to include some adhesive in your bag as well.
Be Mindful of What You Eat
While chewing on the ice in your airplane drink may be satisfying, ice is the number one cause of broken or chipped teeth. Avoid chewing on ice or any incredibly hard (such as candy or kernels) or chewy foods. While you may miss out on some local cuisine, it’s much better than having dental damage and not being able to reach a dentist.
Check Ahead
Talk with your travel agent or the local embassy about recommended dentists in the area. While nothing can beat your regular office, in case of an emergency you will be much better off being prepared.
